ADSL / SDSL

Wizards bring you ADSL and SDSL services from a number of core network providers.Note this page is general information - pricing is here.

BT

BT are of course the biggest network. But that doesn't mean you should buy your broadband directly from them. Go with the supplier who gives you the best support! And despite what it says, if you need decent wireless cover for a large building, or multiple buildings, you need to speak to us.

We can supply a range of ADSL and SDSL services based on BT's core network at speeds of up to 8mbits/sec, and, soon, as BT enable the exchanges, up to 24mbits/sec.

To install one of these services you'll have to have a BT phone line first. But talk to us before ordering anything, we can arrange things in the most efficient manner!

ADSL services can be used in conjunction with voice services on the phone line. SDSL services require a dedicated line. Please talk to us before ordering any new BT lines!

Installation takes a week from date of order if everything goes smoothly with BT. During that time we can arrange to hepl you choose routers, firewalls, etc., and make sure they're shipped to you in good time. If you wish to take advantage of our on-site installation services we can discuss the options and possibilities.

Cable and Wireless.

If you have a Cable and Wireless service on your local exchange, we can provide you (as of September 2009 - though this may change as C&W's network fills up) with an unlimited uncapped service of up to 24mbits/sec for a flat £34 per month.

Tiscali

If you have a Tiscali service on your local exchange, we can provide a range of services based on Tiscali's business network.Initially we are just offering a "low user" account on this network but this may change.

Easynet

Wizards also resell Easynet ADSL, SDSL and Leased Line services to provide a secondary redundant connection option. We can tell you if Easynet LLU services are available on your site, arrange connection for you, and provide a single unified bill. We can also arrange router/firewall combinations which will permanently connect you to two or more concurrent internet services and provide fail-over and load-balancing of your traffic.

Note that unlike the above services, we don't control or manage the Easynet service direct from our network centre, it is completely separate from any of our other systems.

Oh it's so confusing!!!

Please don't panic. We want to offer you a wide range of services but we know that means we may be baffling you with too much choice. Please feel free to call us and discuss the options, what's available on your exchange, and how it might all fit together for you. We would far rather talk to you before you place an order and be sure you are getting the best options for your business or home.

Availability checker.

Please click on this link to show what services (except easynet) are available on your exchange, and also what speeds to expect from your line.

If you are interested in Easynet service, call, we'll check that for you.

Speed - a note.

What does "up to 8mbits" mean? You will have heard a lot of fuss in the press about people not getting the service they are paying for. We feel it's important that you understand that when you sign up for a broadband service, it will say "up to 8meg" or "up to 24meg", etc., that this speed is the maximum possible speed that the system could provide over a perfect quality phone line of no more than 20 yards from the telephone exchange. The number of people in this situation in the entire country has been checked carefully and found to be  seven.  For EVERYONE ELSE which almost certainly includes you, your line is not perfect, and is longer than 20 yards. Both these factors will mean you don't get the maxiumum speed, and never will. And sadly some of you are still so far from the exchange you may not get a reliable service at all. PLEASE use the availability checker to find out what speed to actually expect from your line - and note that whilst even this speed is not guaranteed, faster speeds simply won't ever happen.

Allowance.

Against most of the tarrifs on our price list you will find an "allowance" figure. This is the maximum amount of data that you can download on the service between 0800 and 2000 hours (8am to 8pm)in any one calendar month. If you expect to be making large downloads which may exceed this allowance, please try to arrange that they take place outside these hours. If you exceed the allowance within the specified hours during the month your speed will be automatically capped to 128k during the daytime period. In this event you can contact us to arrange to move to a higher tarrif or make a one-off purchase of extra-capacity.

You can always see how much you've used from day to day during the month on your customer portal page - this page will also estimate what your monthly total will be based on your usage so far. If you are a heavy user, please check on the portal from time to time to see if you are in any danger.

ADSL

Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Link. This is the most common broadband service available - features a download speed way larger than the upload speed, because most users download more than they upload! In particular, web access means sending off a small request and receiving in return a large amount of web page data, file downloads, etc.

SDSL

Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Link. This is a similar service but features the SAME upload speed as download. e.g. a 2mbit SDSL has a 2mbti download speed and a 2mbit upload speed. More useful for business users and, accordinly, priced with that in mind. NOTE that with an SDSL service you CANNOT use the phone line for vioce calls as well as you can with ADSL.
