ADSL Routers and Modems

Wizards recommends Zyxel ADSL routers

We have been reselling Zyxel routers for over 10 years and have found them to be extremely reliable. They are also highly suited to commercial use as they feature full stateful inspection firewalls with total control of inbound and outbound rulesets, and true physically separate DMZ ports.

There are a range of routers with different levels of features to enable you to best match your requirement - though of course if you need help deciding we'll be only too happy to chat, give us a call.

There is a USB ADSL modem in the range - we do NOT recommend using a modem, however, even if you have only a single computer to connect, the firewall capabilities in even the smallest router will protect you much better from internet-based attacks than the modem can, even if you have a software firewall and up to date anti-virus on the computer.

For purchase prices, please see this page in our on-line shop. You can buy on-line or call us. Note if you are buying a router to go with your Wizards broadband connection, we can pre-configure the router for you.

Note that all of these routers are compatoble with ADSL (as currently supplied by most UK ISPs) and also with ADSL2+, whcih a few UK ISPs already supply and the mainstream ISPs will be rolling out later in 2008. If you buy any of these routers you will NOT have to upgrade to move to the faster systems.

Zyxel Prestige 660R-D1

This is the baby of the range, and, most importantly, has no firewall. It features SUA/NAT or full-feature NAT but has no SPI firewall, and is designed explicitly for use where the internet connection is made via a separate firewall appliance. e.g. if you use a Zywall USG300 or a Sonicwall TZ190 as your main firewall system, then you don't need an addtional firewall in the router and, indeed, having one there could prove problematic. This is the router to choose.

Zyxel Prestige 660H-D1 and 660HW-D1.

The 660H models offer a full firewall, a four-port 10/100 switch on the LAN side, and, with the "W" model, a built-in 802.11g_ WiFi access point. They do NOT have support for VPN, at all, this cannot be added by later firmware upgrade. They of course permit VPN-Passthrough, however.

Zyxel Prestige 661H-D1 and 661HW-D1

The 661 models offer the same features as the 660, but with the addition of support for IPSec VPN, for two concurrent connections.

Zyxel Prestige 662H-D1 and 661HW-D1

As the 662 series but with a coprocessor increasing the VPN performance to allow up to 20 concurrent connections. The 662 also features a full physically separate DMZ port (one of the four ports - it can be reconfigured as a simple LAN port).

Zywall firewalls and USG appliances.  Sonicwall firewalls, UDP appliances, Mail filter systems.

If you need greater flexibility than you can get from the above routers, i.e. more VPN sessions, more comprehensive firewalling, or you want built-in anti-virus, anti-spyware, content-filtering,e tc., then the route to take is to select a seprarate full feature security system such as the Zywall USG or Sonicwall TotalCare system, and use the Zyxel Prestige 660R-D1to connect the WAN port of this appliance to the ADSL line. Wizards have extensive experience of setting up security systems and will be more than happy to advise on, sell and install an appropriate solution... give us a call.
